Is Bukit Lawang safe for tourists?

Yes. Bukit Lawang is one of the safest destinations in North Sumatra. The village is friendly, and most visitors enjoy a safe and memorable experience. Joining a licensed local guide is recommended for jungle trekking.

Can I see wild orangutans in Bukit Lawang?

Yes. Bukit Lawang is one of the best places in the world to see wild and semi-wild Sumatran orangutans in their natural rainforest habitat. Wildlife sightings are common, but they are never guaranteed because the animals live freely.

What is the best time to visit Bukit Lawang?

The best time is generally between March until September when rainfall is lower. However, jungle trekking is available all year, and orangutans can be seen in every season.

How difficult is the jungle trek?

Most treks are suitable for people with average fitness. Some sections are steep and muddy, especially after rain, but your guide will adjust the pace to suit the group.

Can children join the jungle trek?

Yes. Families with children can join shorter treks. We recommend the 3–4 hour trek or a private 1-day trek for younger children.

What should I pack for the trek?

Bring lightweight clothing, hiking shoes or sandals with good grip, insect repellent, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, swimwear, a towel, and a small backpack.

How many orangutans will I see?

There is no guaranteed number because the orangutans are wild. Many visitors see several orangutans, along with other rainforest wildlife.

Are the orangutans really wild?

Most orangutans now live independently in the rainforest. Some are descendants of rehabilitation programs, but they roam freely and are not kept in enclosures.

Is camping included in the 2-day trek?

Yes. The 2-day jungle trek includes overnight camping beside the river, with meals, tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, and camping equipment provided.

Is food included?

Yes. Fresh meals, tropical fruits, snacks, drinking water, tea, and coffee are included during the trek.

Do I need hiking experience?

No. Previous hiking experience is not necessary. Most beginners can complete the trek comfortably with guidance from experienced local guides.

How hot is the rainforest?

Temperatures usually range between 24°C and 32°C (75°F–90°F), with high humidity throughout the year.

Will it rain?

Rain is possible at any time in a tropical rainforest. A light rain jacket is recommended regardless of the season.

What animals can I see besides orangutans?

You may also see Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, pig-tailed macaques, hornbills, gibbons, monitor lizards, and many tropical birds.

Is river tubing included?

Most overnight treks finish with an exciting river tubing adventure back to Bukit Lawang.

Are there leeches in the jungle?

Leeches can occasionally be found during the rainy season, but they are usually harmless. Wearing long socks can help reduce the chance of contact.

No. There is no electricity at the jungle campsite, so bringing a fully charged power bank is recommended.

Can I charge my phone during the trek?

Are toilets available?

Simple jungle toilets are available at the campsite, although facilities are basic.

Is the trek suitable for older travelers?

Yes. Many guests in their 50s, 60s, and even older enjoy the trek. Private tours allow the pace to be adjusted to suit your fitness level.

Do you offer private tours?

Yes. Private jungle trekking tours are available every day for couples, families, solo travelers, and groups.

How do I get to Bukit Lawang from Medan?

The journey takes around 3–4 hours by car. We can arrange private airport transfers or hotel pickups from Medan.

Do I need to book in advance?

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during the high season from June to September and during Christmas and New Year.
