Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang

Located approximately 90 kilometers from Medan, Bukit Lawang is a charming riverside village in North Sumatra and one of Indonesia's most celebrated ecotourism destinations. Bordering the vast Gunung Leuser National Park, it offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of the oldest and most biologically diverse tropical rainforests on the planet.

Bukit Lawang is best known for its close connection to the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. In the 1970s, the area became an important center for orangutan conservation, helping rescued animals return to life in the wild. Today, the rehabilitation program has fulfilled its mission, and these remarkable primates now roam freely throughout the surrounding forest.

A jungle trek through Gunung Leuser National Park offers the chance to encounter not only orangutans but also Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, white-handed gibbons, hornbills, giant squirrels, monitor lizards, and countless species of tropical birds and insects. Hidden deeper within the ecosystem are elusive animals such as Sumatran tigers, elephants, clouded leopards, sun bears, and rhinoceroses.

The rainforest itself forms part of the UNESCO-listed Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, an internationally recognized natural treasure that protects one of Southeast Asia's last great wilderness areas. Its towering trees, crystal-clear rivers, and rich biodiversity create an unforgettable setting for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

At Bukit Lawang Trekking, our local guides share generations of knowledge about the forest, its wildlife, and the traditions of the surrounding communities. We are committed to responsible tourism, promoting ethical wildlife encounters while supporting conservation and local livelihoods.

Beyond the jungle, Bukit Lawang offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can relax beside the Bohorok River, enjoy authentic Indonesian cuisine, or explore the village's friendly culture. Whether you are seeking an adventurous multi-day trek, a wildlife photography expedition, or
