Elephant Bathing
Tangkahan Elephants Bathing
Itinerary
From Bukit lawang to Tangkahan You will start with a transfer in an air-conditioned car. Then, enjoy a 2-hour off-road journey. The jungle roads can be bumpy. However, you will see small villages along the way. You will also notice palm oil plantations stretching as far as the eye can see. These plantations have greatly affected the rainforest.
After breakfast at 9 AM, you’ll join the daily elephant bathing in the Buluh River Tangkahan, led by our partner CRU/LPT. You’ll spend up to an hour washing the elephants and talking with the mahouts. Then, choose how to spend the rest of your day in this peaceful place. For example, you can swim across the river to a natural hot spring. Additionally, you may relax by the river or explore the nearby jungle paths.
Home to the Sumatran elephant conservation herd, this area protects nine of these gentle giants. Each one is in good health and well cared for. Previously, they were rescued from human-elephant conflicts in Banda Aceh. Since then, they have been trained to patrol the forests of Gunung Leuser National Park. In addition, their main goal is to prevent poaching and protect the remaining wild elephant population. As a result, they play a key role in local conservation efforts in .
