Ethical Rules for Jungle Trekking in Mount Leuser Park
“Collect memories in photos, leave nothing but footsteps, and spend only your time.”
The habitat of the Sumatran orangutans, one of the rarest great ape species in the world, is a strictly protected area. As a result, trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park is only possible with an entrance permit and an official guide. The entire forest ecosystem is a delicately balanced network of animals and plants, where many species rely on each other. For this reason, it is every visitor’s responsibility to minimize negative tourism impacts and help protect critically endangered species and their habitat.
Below, you will find (in a condensed form) the official visitor guidelines for Gunung Leuser National Park, designed to keep both the orangutans and their guests safe.
Don’t touch the orangutans or any other wildlife.
Don’t feed the orangutans under any circumstances.
Never position yourself between two orangutans.
Don’t call to or lure orangutans; this can cause stress and disrupt their natural behavior.
Avoid sudden movements and excessive noise, as these may be perceived as a threat.
Keep at least 8 meters of distance from the orangutans.
· Don’t enter the rainforest if you are sick.
Don’t remove, damage, or alter any vegetation in the forest.
Don’t take leaves, seeds, or shells from the forest, since all of them play an important role in the ecosystem
By following these simple guidelines, visitors can observe Sumatran orangutans at Bukit Lawang in a way that is safe for both themselves and the orangutans.
