Explore the Bat Cave
Bat Cave
The Bat Cave, known locally as Gua Kampret, is a fascinating natural attraction located just 2 kilometers from the village of Bukit Lawang. Not only is it easy to reach, but it also offers a truly unique underground experience. Moreover, this hidden gem is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. This small cave system winds through limestone formations and is nestled within a lush forest. The cave gets its name from the two species of bats that inhabit it, often seen hanging from the ceilings of its three chambers
Getting to the Bat Cave Bukit Lawang
Your journey to the cave begins at the Ecolodge Hotel, where you will meet your local guide. From there, you’ll follow a scenic trail through the lush rainforest. Along the way, you might spot wildlife and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature.
Once you reach the cave entrance, your guide will share important safety tips. After that, you’ll need a torch or flashlight because the cave stretches about 500 meters into the earth. Since there is no natural light inside, visibility is very low. As you move deeper into the cave, thousands of bats will fly overhead and hang from the ceiling. In addition, the cool, dark environment adds a sense of mystery and adventure.
Besides the impressive bat colonies, the cave also has dramatic rock formations. It features a cool, damp atmosphere that makes the experience even more exciting. Furthermore, exploring the Bat Cave is both thrilling and educational. When you join a knowledgeable guide, you’ll gain valuable insights into the cave’s unique ecosystem. Whether you’re into wildlife, interested in geology, or simply seeking a one-of-a-kind adventure, the Bat Cave in Bukit Lawang won’t disappoint. As a result, this tour adds something truly special to your visit.
Landak River
About a kilometer further along the trail lies the serene and slow-moving Landak River, also known as the Porcupine River. This peaceful waterway offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains of the National Park. Its rocky banks provide the perfect setting for swimming, relaxing, enjoying a barbecue, and soaking in the area’s natural charm.
Several new campsites have recently been established along the riverbank, drawing local visitors—especially on weekends. However, those who venture a bit further upstream will likely discover secluded spots perfect for quiet, undisturbed relaxation.
Ship Rock
An additional 1 km walk brings you to Ship Rock (Batu Kapal), a well-known local landmark. This massive rock and cave formation resembles the bow of a ship, which is how it earned its name. A trail leads through the heart of the rock formation, but for a more immersive experience, consider joining our Adventure Eco Trek to fully explore this impressive natural wonder.
The tour begins at your guesthouse, with the option to set off either on foot or by motorbike. The route primarily passes through stretches of palm oil plantations.
